Somewhere to mention/discuss the new articles that are published on the AFDPJ blog. Or even the older ones, if you so wish!
Managed to get on a mini-roll this weekend and add a couple more of the #1s - we're up to 130 now. They're different to the other stuff I think about posting because the order of them is pre-determined (as they are exactly how they followed on my charts of the day), and sometimes it's hard to be in the right frame of mind or head-space to due justice to them, or capture the tone that I want to bring to a particular record's writeup.
So going from Bros to Prefab was actually very easy. Looking ahead at the next batch of 1988 chart-toppers, there's nothing there to provide me with too much trouble. Some of my favourite acts of all-time. 1988 was one of those years which was better than I gave it credit for at the time.
The next batch of Q retrospectives is something I want to try and focus on, as I know the first 5 were popular and brought a lot of good feedback. I have the 50 albums all mapped out, so it's a question of checking all the Q facts and figures, and getting used to writing about music made after 1990!

The #1s are a great read. Spot on re Bros. I went from disdain to buying the album and secretly putting stickers on school books. I have Spotify playlists done up of your Q lists. 3 covering the first 50 albums and then 3 more covering singles from those albums. Called Q 33 and Q 45. Here is example of two of them.

Nice work! Looks like I'll have some more playlists to add to my iTunes.

That first playlist manages to feature nearly all my favourite non-single tracks from those albums. Great selection. The only one I'd even think about changing would be Caroline for Tango In The Night, but the latter is my 2nd fave on that anyway.

Used the #131 Number One post as an opportunity to write about Prince's Lovesexy era, and how it relates to the albums/music before it. There won't be another Prince #1 for a while, and I didn't get to write much about the Sign O The Times era beyond the piece for its Top 100 Albums feature in 2016.
The vault stuff on the Sign SDE made me reassess that part of his career, as I had no idea tracks like Eye No were originally from the 1986/87 sessions in a different guise. I think Lovesexy was still a definite reaction to the darker tone he'd got into by late 1987, it's just not as black and white as I used to believe. He obviously chose certain material from his stockpile of songs, and then presented it in this consciously brighter way.

Do you prefer Lovesexy as a single continuous piece or as individual tracks?

Do you prefer Lovesexy as a single continuous piece or as individual tracks? My copy, bought first day of release (9/5/88) is the continuous one. I've never listened to it any other way. I suppose with Audacity etc I could chop it up and burn a separated version. That's an idea... It's a pretty decent album by most people's standards, and half of it is top drawer...I just felt disappointed with it back then, for some reason. Maybe it wasn't mysterious enough or something. It actually fitted in well with the sound of the UK chart at the time, all the quirky bright pop. My run of #1s from Bros to Prince was definitely an "up" time.

I bought the LP at the time, CD around 1990 and it was split into tracks. No real difference, still continuous but separated by track markers. Still awkward on shuffle play or burning particular tracks. Very enjoyable still, the last one in his imperial run that began with Dirty Mind

It used to be a nightmare to put I Wish You Heaven on a C90 mixtape.

Definitely - that's when Hits 9 came in handy

I might give Lovesexy a spin tonight.

As well as more 1988 Number 1s to cover, something I might tackle is "Everything is Brucken", which could incorporate all the Propaganda and Act binge listening I've been busy with lately, and the Laughter Rage & Tears SDE project I posted here the other day.

My determination to get some fresh content up continues with a lengthy look at OMD's Junk Culture. I've really got into this album (and era) lately, thanks to creating a deluxe version. Don't throw it away!

Toying with the idea of a Wang Chung feature.

Okay, so after thinking about various new albums/projects to feature (Wang Chung, Tina Turner, Dire Straits)...I'm going to go back and finish the "Q: The Music" series that I only got halfway through last summer. Fingers crossed!
