Inspired by my piece on Alphabet St., I went for this rather than the whole of Lovesexy. Or, more accurately, a dozen tracks off CD2 as I was "in the mood" for the Parade > Sign > Lovesexy > Batdance > Graffiti run of (selected) singles. Thanks to @nlgbbbbth for reminding me that this collection had the edit of Glam Slam!

Aloha to all. Sorry for my lack of contribution to the forum of late - had a terrible ear infection which lasted a fortnight and left me most unsuited to pleasant interaction to say the least. Seems to be quashed now, hurrah.
Previously on Anfunny FM;
Brigid Boden - Self-titled (1996) - Celtic trip hop? Unusual mix (Tricky X The Corrs?) from this Irish act. Always meant to put her in the PJ 80s-90s females thread! Dusty Trails - Self-titled (2000) - cinematic magic from a Luscious Jackson and a Breeder. Isabella - IZA (1992) - Scandi pop/rock from future Bond Girl (Goldeneye), very ABBA in places. Private Property - Self-titled (1989) - Female fronted pop/rock, unspectacular '80s M.O.R. but well produced. Rain People - Self-titled (1989) - Folky, pop/rock - male lead and female counter vocals, a la Prefab Sprout or Deacon Blue. Bit softer, tho. Ultra Living - Monochromatic Adventure (1998) - Trip hop and beyond on Creation Records (!), female vocals and retro-futuristic jazz/D&B arrangements.
...and the usual smattering of new stuff from likes of Black Honey and Tune-Yards.

Just don't bother with their sole CD single, which contains nothing that isn't on the album, if you decide to invest(igate). I think they carried on after the debut, but not on a major label. Haven't gone down that rabbit hole, I'm happy with the one album.

Haven't gone down that rabbit hole, I'm happy with the one album. I'll see if I can get a reasonably priced copy of the CD album. There's one from a good German seller I have used before, but don't know about customs charges etc anymore since Brexit. My items from "momox" come from Germany and don't incur any fees. I guess small value items aren't a problem. There's one for about £5 I might get. BTW, glad you're feeling a bit better again!

Heartbeat City by The Cars is on heavy rotation at the moment. I think it nails that American 'new wave' / synth pop rock sound. For some reason they never did as well this side of the Atlantic but I consider this one of the classic albums of the 80s, it really is all killer. Talking of killer they also made The actual Killers inessential years in advance. Brandon and Co. copied them lock, stock and barrel but still never surpassed anything on Heartbeat City (I do love The Killers btw!). For me the actual song Heartbeat City (originally titled Jacki) captures the exact same mood as The Boys Of Summer. That intro......I think it invented all things Italians Do It Better and modern synthwave. It's so evocative and melancholic, I can't quite explain it.

Yes, the title track from Heartbeat City is just everything, isn't it. Absolutely sublime. That's the one which really turned me onto the Cars...Drive was nice, reminded me of a good Cliff Richard ballad, but then the Live Aid overkill spoiled it a bit for a few years.
The Cars Greatest Hits collection is all killer (!) and no filler.

Eric, the Ross Cullum / Chris Hughes produced 'This Side Of Paradise' the second Ric Ocasek album from 1986 is right up your street if you haven't already got it (I'd be surprised if you haven't but felt like posting the songs anyway!) It sounds like a follow-up to Heartbeat City even if Mutt Lange is not involved. Your old favourite Roland Orzabal plays on one of the songs as well. It's produced within an inch of it's life which I love. I've ordered two of his early 90s album as they sound pretty good as well. I didn't realise that he sadly passed away in 2019. I must get his debut but the original is kind of pricey on CD and I'm slightly worried that the recently issued remaster will mess up by playlists volume. Keep On Laughin' (is basically Heartbeat City MkII) and Look In Your Eyes are my favourites but it's all great. Mutt Lange produced the b-side Breakaway (from Tonight She Comes) which I presume was part of the Heartbeat City era and was on the mid 90s best of (which AMAZINGLY for a 2CD edition DIDN'T have Heartbeat City on it??!!

Yes, This Side of Paradise is much more of a "sequel" to Heartbeat City than Door To Door (which was never intended to be, really).
I keep meaning to make a Ric Ocasek anthology.

After pigging out on Level 42 over last 3 days (very enjoyable set), I am now on Heaven 17 - How Men Are from the The Virgin Years box. Possibly becoming my favourite album of theirs.

Yes, I used to think it was a bit slight (beyond the singles) but I'm coming around to it more lately. The Luxury Gap is still my favourite. The early press blue-face How Men Are sounds amazing. I've got 3 or 4 versions of it now, and actually created one of my Super Deluxes, adding in the single mixes and other related material.

Tonight's listening was the last two-thirds of this: ..as I fell asleep after 3 songs the previous time, due to medication effects. Parade always feels like *my* album, being 1984 and everything, but True is probably the stronger set. Not least because of those 4 cracking singles. Gold and True bring back vivid memories of 1983. I assumed I had a standard Chrysalis version of this on CD, but it's actually a US early press by CBS!
