I am playing all things Sarah Blackwood, maybe the greatest of all the pop Sarahs. The two recent Dubstar singles are brilliant, no one quite does a twisted pop lyric so well. From Hygiene Strip......on meeting her ex in a lockdown queue.... 'When did you learn to learn to laugh and be kind'? 'You always looked more approachable in casual shirts' 'It must be illegal to kiss by now, by now, by now ..... bye, now' youtu.be/W4efy7WBvpA

Classic from 1984, but kind of lost amongst so many other classics that year. UK peak of #44 (!!). 6 singles, and a 7th - Matts Mood II - was a sort-of single too, being on the flip of Half A Minute (I think).

I am finding that there is very little new pop that I am interested in. I tend to prefer modern pop that is synthy, kind of hard edged, highly produced and melodic but maybe that era is over for now. I remember it kind of starting with Closer by Tegan & Sara and reaching a high point with Taylor Swift's Style. Max Martin and Greg Kurstin produced so much pop music that really appeals to me. I have zero interest in 'woman of the woods' era Taylor, I just find it boring. I really must have born to the sound of the synthesiser. Other good examples are Never Mine by Sigrid or anything on Lost Girls by Bat For Lashes, probably the last two pop albums I loved. Lost Girls in particular. youtu.be/twh3cDkOH2Iyoutu.be/qm3Xg289qTM

I love that Matt Bianco debut album so much so I have everything by Basia, she really nailed light pop which is trickier than it seems I think. I thought her debut album would be huge but she did do surprisingly well in America for some reason.

Basia is all over the debut, with those amazing vocals.

Yes I do like them ..... when I say new pop I mean this year. The only new album I bought so far was SG Lewis 'times' which I like but don't love.

I am due to head down a vintage Vangelis rabbit hole in the next few days as have ordered a few CDs that I didn't have. The album covers always appealed to me. I got the originals as the recent remasters have been 'dabbled' with by the man himself. Probably not as badly dabbled as the Robin Guthrie hatchet job on the Cocteau Twins but I am taking no risks. I had a similar trip with Tangerine Dream a while ago, I think they basically invented spacey ambient 'chillout' ( a term I do not support!) with Phaedra from 1974.

View AttachmentYeah, I did a similar thing a few years back, as part of a Vangelis project. I got mainly remasters (they were 4.99 at the time), but it's probably a wise move to get as many originals as possible.

Oedipussy - 'Divan' (1994, alternative indie rock, AKA ex-Perfect Disaster Phil Parfitt) Jupiter - 'Juicy Lucy' (2012, French synth-pop and disco duo) Neil Innes - 'How Sweet To Be An idiot' (1973, debut album from the magician from 1980s kids TV 'Puddle Lane') Amanda Ghost - 'Ghost Stories' (2000, alternative rock, trip hop and electronica from Boy George's mate) Imani Coppola - 'Chupacabra' (1997, hip-hop and pop rap flavoured kooky pop - criminally slept on)
...and the new album from The Anchoress, 'The Art Of Losing' (out this week).

That Amanda Ghost album feels like it should have been a proper success, such great songs and attitude. I remember buying Imani in Tower Records when it came out, the Neneh Cherry meets Beck description made it hard to resist but I didn't love it straight away, it grew on me over the years, I might even have a CD single somewhere.

Vocally, she reminds me of PJ Harvey and Karen Carpenter, and it's a good album, as was her first. She also did one late last year under her actual name, Catherine Anne Davies, in collaboration with Bernard Butler. That's also good, and they covered Madonna's 'Live To tell', which is beautiful.
